MVP Development Cost in India: What You Pay at Each of 6 Stages
MVP development cost in India typically runs between ₹9 lakh and ₹38 lakh in 2026, depending on whether you are building one app or a two-sided marketplace. The build itself is about 60 percent of that. Discovery, design, QA, release and the first 90 days of fixes make up the rest.
Ask three agencies for an MVP development cost in India and you will get three numbers that differ by a factor of three, with no way to tell which one is honest. Most quotes founders receive are a single number with no working shown. That number is impossible to argue with and impossible to trust. This post does the opposite. It takes published hourly benchmarks, applies them to the hours a real MVP actually consumes, and shows what lands in each stage of the build. Every external figure here is sourced and dated. Nothing is invented.
What actually drives MVP development cost in India
Two things set the price: the hourly rate of the team, and the number of hours the scope demands. Everything else is detail.
On rates, two independent published sources give a usable band. Clutch’s directory of software developers in India shows most listed firms in the under 25 US dollars per hour band, with 10,000 to 49,000 US dollars as the most common project size. Accelerance, which vets and benchmarks outsourcing partners globally, reports in its 2026 outsourcing rate trends analysis that Asian junior developers bill 24 to 31 US dollars per hour and seniors 31 to 41 US dollars per hour, with effective rates down close to 8 percent year on year.
At the mid-market rate of roughly ₹95.7 to the US dollar on 25 August 2026, that gives a blended working band of about ₹1,900 to ₹3,900 per hour for an Indian product team. Every rupee figure below is that band multiplied by realistic stage hours. These are market-derived ranges, not a price list.
On scope, the variables that move hours most are the number of distinct user roles, whether money changes hands inside the product, whether you need native mobile on both platforms, and whether the product touches regulated data. A single-role app with no payments is a different animal from a marketplace with buyers, sellers, payouts and disputes. If you are scoping the latter, our guide to two-sided marketplace development covers what to build first and where the Indian compliance layer changes the architecture.
The six stages of an MVP build, and what each costs
An MVP is not one line item. It is six, and founders routinely budget for only one of them.
| Stage | What it produces | Typical hours | Cost at ₹1,900 to ₹3,900 per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0. Discovery and scoping | User flows, feature list split into must and later, data model, architecture sketch, fixed estimate | 30 to 70 | ₹0.6 L to ₹2.7 L |
| 1. UX and UI design | Wireframes, clickable prototype, final screens, component library | 60 to 150 | ₹1.1 L to ₹5.9 L |
| 2. Core build | Front end, back end, database, integrations, admin panel | 250 to 750 | ₹4.8 L to ₹29.3 L |
| 3. QA and hardening | Test cases, device matrix, load check, security pass, bug fixes | 50 to 130 | ₹0.9 L to ₹5.1 L |
| 4. Release and store submission | Production setup, store listings, review responses, analytics wiring | 15 to 40 | ₹0.3 L to ₹1.6 L |
| 5. First 90 days after launch | Crash fixes, the two or three features real users demand immediately | 60 to 160 | ₹1.1 L to ₹6.2 L |
All figures exclude GST. Software development services in India attract GST at 18 percent, so add that to any quote from an Indian vendor unless you are an exporter operating under a Letter of Undertaking.
Where the money actually goes
The core build is 55 to 62 percent of the total on almost every project. That is expected. What surprises founders is stage 5. The first 90 days after launch reliably costs more than design did, because that is when the assumptions in your spec meet actual users. Teams that treat launch as the end of the budget end up raising a bridge round to fix bugs.
The stage founders try to skip
Discovery is the cheapest stage and the one most often cut. It is also the only stage that can remove hours from stage 2. A week spent deciding that release one does not need in-app chat saves 60 to 100 hours of build. Skipping discovery does not save ₹2 lakh. It usually costs ₹6 lakh in rework.
MVP development cost in India by product type
Scope archetypes are more useful than a single average. These three cover most of what early-stage teams in Delhi NCR and Bengaluru actually commission.
| MVP type | What is in scope | Calendar time | Indicative range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single platform | One web or one mobile app, 10 to 14 screens, OTP login, one payment flow, basic admin panel | 8 to 10 weeks | ₹9 L to ₹18 L |
| Two-sided marketplace | Customer app, partner app, admin panel, matching logic, payouts, ratings, dispute handling | 12 to 16 weeks | ₹18 L to ₹38 L |
| Regulated or AI-heavy | The above plus KYC and AML checks, health or financial data handling, audit trails, or a trained model in the request path | 14 to 20 weeks | ₹28 L to ₹55 L |
The jump from column one to column two is not double the screens. It is a second set of users with a different mental model, a money flow that has to reconcile, and a support surface. Our Epicircle recycling marketplace build is a worked example of that second archetype: a customer app, a partner app and a web admin panel, with pin-code level architecture and escrow payments. Three surfaces, not one.
If your product is closer to a single mobile app, the stage arithmetic in our guide to mobile app development cost in India goes deeper on platform choice and device testing.
What it costs to keep the MVP running
Build cost is one-time. Run cost is forever, and it starts the day you deploy. For an MVP serving its first few thousand users, a lean stack on managed infrastructure is enough.
Using published Amazon Lightsail pricing as the reference, a 2 GB instance is 12 US dollars a month and a 4 GB instance is 24 US dollars. A managed database starts at 15 US dollars a month for 1 GB and 60 US dollars for 4 GB.
| Item | Monthly USD | Monthly INR (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Application server (2 to 4 GB) | $12 to $24 | ₹1,150 to ₹2,300 |
| Managed database (1 to 4 GB) | $15 to $60 | ₹1,450 to ₹5,750 |
| Object storage, CDN, backups | $5 to $25 | ₹500 to ₹2,400 |
| Error tracking and uptime monitoring | $0 to $30 | ₹0 to ₹2,900 |
| Transactional email | $0 to $20 | ₹0 to ₹1,900 |
That is roughly ₹3,100 to ₹15,250 a month before traffic-driven costs. Worth knowing: AWS Activate offers up to 5,000 US dollars in credits to self-funded founders and up to 200,000 US dollars to startups with an Organization ID from an accelerator or VC, on the condition that the company is pre-Series B and under ten years old. Many MVPs run their entire first year on credits.
Fees, taxes and rules founders forget to budget
These are small individually and awkward when they arrive unplanned.
- App store accounts. The Apple Developer Program is 99 US dollars a year, roughly ₹9,500. A Google Play developer account is a one-time 25 US dollars, roughly ₹2,400. Apple’s is a renewal, so it recurs.
- Payment gateway. Razorpay’s published standard plan is 2 percent plus GST per transaction with no setup fee and no annual maintenance charge. On ₹10 lakh of monthly GMV that is around ₹23,600 a month including GST. Model it before you price your take rate.
- Maps. Since 1 March 2025 Google Maps Platform replaced the flat 200 US dollar monthly credit with a per-product free threshold: 10,000 free calls a month on Essentials SKUs, 5,000 on Pro and 1,000 on Enterprise. A delivery or mobility MVP burns through Essentials quickly once drivers are live.
- SMS and OTP. Before you can send a single transactional SMS in India you must complete DLT registration with a TRAI-recognised platform and get your headers and templates approved. Budget two to three weeks of calendar time for this, not just money, and start it during stage 2 rather than the week before launch.
- GST. 18 percent on Indian development services. On a ₹20 lakh build that is ₹3.6 lakh you did not see in the proposal.
- Data protection. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules were notified on 14 November 2025 with an eighteen-month phased compliance period. If your MVP collects personal data, consent capture, a privacy notice, a grievance officer and a deletion path are build items, not legal paperwork you bolt on later. Designing them in during stage 1 costs a fraction of retrofitting them in year two.
Five ways to cut MVP development cost in India without cutting the product
- Ship one platform first. Android-only or web-only halves stage 2 and stage 3. In India, Android-first is usually the correct commercial call, not a compromise.
- Buy the commodity layers. Auth, payments, notifications, analytics and file storage are solved. Every hour spent building them is an hour not spent on the thing your product exists to do.
- Use an admin panel, not an admin product. For the first year your ops team is five people who sit near each other. A functional table view beats a designed dashboard, and saves 60 to 120 hours.
- Cap the roles. Each additional user role adds screens, permissions, test cases and edge cases. Two roles at launch, not four. Our note on custom CRM versus off-the-shelf software makes the same argument for internal tools.
- Fix the scope, not the deadline. Fixed-scope, fixed-price contracts force the hard conversations into stage 0, where they are cheap. Time and materials without a scope ceiling is how a ₹15 lakh MVP becomes a ₹40 lakh one.
What we would put in release one
For a marketplace, release one is: sign-up with OTP, a browsable catalogue, one transaction path that completes end to end, a payment integration, a notification on state change, and an admin view that lets a human intervene when something breaks. That is it. No chat, no loyalty points, no referral engine, no second language.
For a SaaS tool, release one is: sign-up, the single workflow that replaces the spreadsheet, one export, and billing. Everything a competitor has on their feature page is a distraction until you know that one workflow gets used twice a week.
The discipline is not about spending less. It is about spending the same money on fewer things, so that the things you did build are finished rather than half-built. A half-built feature costs full price and returns nothing.
Once you have a number you trust, the next decision is who builds it. Our 12-point checklist for choosing a software development company in Delhi NCR covers the entity, contract and handover checks worth running before you sign anything.
Get a number you can actually plan against
If you want your own scope costed against these stages rather than a single lump-sum figure, send us your feature list. Our MVP development team will come back with a stage-by-stage breakdown showing hours, sequence and what we would cut from release one. You can take that breakdown to any vendor. It is more useful to you than a quote, because MVP development cost in India only becomes plannable once it is split by stage.
